A little tree that may grow up to 33 feet tall and has spreading branches, guavas are easily identified by their smooth, thin, copper-coloured bark that peels off to reveal the greenish layer underneath. They are also distinguished by the appealing "bony" part of their trunk, which may eventually reach a diameter of 10 inches. Faintly scented white flowers, 2.5 in diameter, with four or five fast-shed white petals and a conspicuous tuft of many white stamens tipped with pale-yellow anthers, are borne singly or in small clusters in the leaf axils. The fruit, which can be round, oval, or pear-shaped, is 5–10 cm long, has thin, light-yellow skin, and 4 or 5 projecting sepals at the top. When ripe, it has a strong, sweet, musky smell.
